what are the benefits of family Mediation?

There are many potential benefits of family mediation. These can include:

  • It provides a safe space for couples to address the practical issues that need resolving between them.

  • Decisions are taken by the clients, which can be psychologically important and make for a less bumpy future.

  • The mediation allows the couple to proceed at their own pace, and only to look to agree at a time when they feel ready to do so.

  • It avoids combative position taking that might otherwise take place, sometimes through aggressive solicitors' letters.

  • As compared to Court proceedings, mediation can be cheaper, faster and more empowering.

  • It is facilitated by a mediator, who is not representing either client, but only trying to help achieve what they want, in their children’s best interests.

  • Positioning children front and centre of clients’ thinking in their arrangements, which can include Child Inclusive Mediation (“CIM”).

  • Even if the mediation does not result in agreement, it can be very helpful in narrowing the issues and enabling each client to understand from the other what is important to them.
